Wilmslow is a town in Cheshire, England. It lies to the south of the city of Manchester between Alderley Edge and Handforth. At the2001 Census, the population of the town was 30,326.^[1]

A little bit about Knutsford

Knutsford is a town and civil parish in the unitary authority area of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, in North West England. It is located about 16 miles (26 km) south-west of Manchester, 25 miles (40 km) east of Liverpool and 11 miles (18 km) northwest of Macclesfield.

Knutsford is situated on the Cheshire Plain, between the Peak District in the South Pennines to the east and the Clwydian Range in the Welsh mountains to the west. Knutsford’s proximity to Manchester has both now and historically helped it become a commuter town for those employed in Manchester. Today the town’s location gives it easy access to Merseyside as well as Manchester.

Knutsford’s main town centre streets, Princess Street (also known locally as Top Street) and King Street lower down, and also known as Bottom Street, form the “hub” of the town. A little bit about prestbury

Prestbury is a village, civil parish and ecclesiastical parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county ofCheshire, England. Prestbury is a long, narrow parish covering 1,165 hectares to the west of the Peak Park foothills and to the east of the sandstone ridge which is ‘the edge’. The village is about 1.5 miles (3 km) north of Macclesfield. At the time of the 2001 census, the civil parish had a population of 3,324.^[1] It is one of the most sought after and expensive places to live outside of London. The ecclesiastical parish^[2] is almost the same as the former Prestbury local government ward which consisted of the civil parishes of Prestbury, Adlington, and Mottram St. Andrew. The population in 2001 was 5,034.^[3]

A little bit about Bollington

Bollington is a small rural town and civil parish in the county of Cheshire, (County Palatine of Chester), England, in the unitary authority of Cheshire East. It is located east of Prestbury. In the Middle Ages it was part of the Earl of Chester‘s manor of Macclesfield. , and the ancient parish of Prestbury. According to the 2001 UK census, Bollington had a population of 7,095.^[1]

Bollington is also known locally as the Happy Valley.^[2] It is situated on the River Dean and the Macclesfield Canal. It has become a favourite destination for those working in nearby Manchester and Liverpool due to its location and picturesque character.

Bollington’s most famous landmark is White Nancy, a monument that some^[who?] say was built to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo in the Napoleonic Wars at the summit of Kerridge Hill.

Bollington used to be served by the Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple railway, a former railway between Marple Rose Hill and Macclesfield. The railway was built to serve the cotton mills of Bollington and Kerridge stone quarries as well as the coal fields in the area, principally at Poynton^{[citation needed]}. The line was closed in 1970 because British Rail was losing money on the line. Now it is a popular place for walking and riding horses and is known as the Middlewood Way.

Bollington is twinned with Thurles in North Tipperary, Ireland.

A little bit about Macclesfield

Macclesfield is a market town within the unitary authority of Cheshire East, the county palatine of Chester, also known as the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. The population of the Macclesfield urban sub-area at the time of the 2001 census was 50,688. A person from Macclesfield is sometimes referred to as a “Maxonian”, (this reference has been popularised by the local newspapers and did not exist before the 1990s). Macclesfield, like many other areas in Cheshire, is considered to be a relatively affluent town.

However, one of the problems associated with being a major confectionery manufacturer is dealing with the clean-up of the many constituents of these sweets, including machine-clogging glucose and sugar. Sticky residues on production machinery are hard to shift and although the company has used many methods over the years to remove them, each is rather tedious and difficult, especially as cooled sugars tend to harden.

Cleaning also causes a significant loss in production, as not only does the machinery have to be shut down for safety reasons, but as cleaning is manual, it takes quite some time to achieve the high standards acceptable before the machines can be started up again.

Hot stuff

Since the Vega Plus was purchased the company has found that dry steam cleaning is much quicker, easier, and far more effective than manual methods,with machines being brought back into production sooner than ever before.

Generating dry steam heated to 1800 which is applied under constant 8 bar pressure, the Vega Plus quickly dissolves sticky residues which if not fully vaporised by the steam are quickly vacuumed into the waste tank for later disposal.The on-board 1200- watt wet and dry vacuum may be used independently to the steam cleaning process.

Not only production machinery, but any floor and wall spaces can be cleaned, and, due to the high temperatures involved, also sanitised, both quickly and effectively – especially important when dealing with foodstuffs. The Vega Plus also has the facility to add chemicals, rust inhibitors or detergent to the dry steam at the point of use – an advantage in many industrial applications and for extra grease removing power if this is required.The operator controls the additives by means of a separate switch provided on the handle. There is also a digital control panel for more precise settings and thus optimum operator control. With few surface-mounted knobs and indicator lights on its stainless steel body, the Vega Plus is itself easier to keep clean.

“This sale was one of our first in steam cleaning machines,” says Craig Manson, sales director at Cleaning Systems UK,”but we had every confidence in this application as the contracting side of our business has also used these machines elsewhere to great success.”

“There is no doubt that the steam cleaning approach to the endemic problem for a confectioner of removing sticky residues from machinery and other surfaces has brought huge time-saving and production benefits to our factory,” adds James Buist, general manager at The New McCowan’s (Scotland).”It also makes a major contribution to hygiene levels which we take very seriously here.” The company has since ordered a second Vega Plus.

New figures from Department of Communities and Local Government show that the amount of money spent by local authorities in England on clearing up the cigarette ends, food wrappers and other rubbish that we as a nation throw to the ground every year has risen by almost £100 million, from £780 million to £858 million.

Phil Barton, Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive, said: “The figure of £858 million is truly shocking. It is quite obscene that we, as a nation, have to spend more than £3/4 billion clearing up the rubbish that people can’t be bothered to put in a bin.

“There seems to be an attitude of ‘it’s only one cigarette end’ or ‘it’s only one burger wrapper’.

“All those individual items mount up to an estimated two million pieces of litter a day dropped in England.

“We all complain when we see what is perceived to be wasteful spending in organisations and institutions and yet we, as a country, seem to be quite happy to throw litter and, consequently, money away.

“It is time for everyone in this country to clean up their act. A change in everyone’s behaviour will save money but it will also make this country a cleaner, greener and better place to live in.”

Keep Britain Tidy is asking everyone to examine their behaviour and think twice before throwing litter on the floor and if they see an empty crisp packet or drinks can on the floor, pick it up and put it in a bin.

However posters launched as part of the campaign (such as the one pictured) have been branded too saucy by some, with Marie Claire of the Plain English Campaign labelling it “childish and immature.”

She said: “Do they think we all have filthy minds? Maybe we should start a ‘Keep it clean’ campaign for them.”

Keep Britain Tidy has previously been criticised for its “trim my bush” posters.

An article published in the medical journal The Lancet, suggests NDM-1 initially spread in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, but has also been found in 37 patients from the UK who travelled to Asia for medical procedures such as cosmetic surgery.

Chairman of the British Cleaning Council commented: “The potential of NDM-1 to become a worldwide public health problem is great, making the role of hygiene even more important in our daily lives. Regular hand-washing and surface cleaning are two of the simplest but most effective ways to halt the spread of germs.”

Andrew Large, chief executive of the Cleaning and Support Services Association, stressed the importance of general cleanliness in hospital environments: “The everyday cleaning that takes place in hospitals becomes absolutely critical when the threat of new superbug arises. As well as demanding extra care from members of the public towards their own hygiene, we ask that the NHS guarantee that hospital cleaning does not suffer at this critical time as result of the financial pressures facing the health service.”
